What is a Liver Transplant?

A liver transplant is a process of replacing a diseased liver with a donated healthy liver.

Currently more than 1,000 liver transplant are being performed each year in India.

Who needs Liver Transplant?

Patients who developed end stage liver disease with following problems/decompensation will need liver transplantation.

Problems related to liver disease are:

  • Fluid accumulation within the abdomen (ascites).
  • Recurrent bouts of abdominal infection (spontaneous bacterial peritonitis).
  • Loss of consciousness (hepatic encephalopathy).

Liver Transplant are also done for treatment of liver cancer and acute liver failure.

What is the success rate of liver transplant?

Currently the success rate is more than 90% with good long term survival.
